Gala Nettles Gala Nettles

Gala Nettles, Madisonville, Texas, has been a freelance writer and columnist for the equine and other industries for more than 20 years, during which time she has also authored 15 books, primarily about great cutting horses. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and her master’s degree from Sam Houston University, she taught high school English and chaired an English Department before marrying cutting horse trainer Ronnie Nettles. Cutting then became the center of her life. She secretaried the Sam Houston Cutting Horse Association, sat on the NCHA Open Show committee, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Horse Sale Committee, and learned to be completely dressed before emerging from the bedroom, since their home has always been a stopover for many a cutter. Civic duties include guest speaker for numerous organizations, serving as a director on the Oak Ridge Country Club Board, the local Madison County Water Board, the Madison County Real Estate Board, sitting on several committees for Cross Roads Cowboy Church and teaching Sunday School. Nettles has written for Quarter Horse News for more than 20 years.

The Right to Bear Arms

As a high school teenager, I often drove Dad’s ranch truck back to school after lunch, the one with the double gun rack across the back window, home for two of his rifles. Those rifles were a part of everyday ranch life, killing predators that might attack newborn calves and snakes that took a liking to the barn or around the house. I’ve never liked snakes, and to know Daddy could keep me safe from them was a good feeling.

It’s A Good Feeling to Have Professionals Around You

Want a cup of coffee?” asked Dr. Craven.

“Yes, I do,” I answered pulling myself up from where I had squatted on the floor while Dr. Craven examined Lil, our blue heeler. It was only minutes after 8:00 am, but already it had been a long morning, an especially long one since I hadn’t had my first cup of coffee.

Ronnie and I were at Crocket Veterinary Clinic in Crockett, Texas, owned by Dr. Dan Craven. Dr. Craven is an awesome dog vet, probably awesome with other animals, too, but we know firsthand about dogs. When you’ve bred dogs for almost two decades, you meet lots of vets and develop a sixth sense for those who not only know their business but care about their clients. No, not the owners: the animals! It’s what grows trust and appreciation and we have a lot of both for Dr. Craven, enough to bypass other clinics.

Sometimes You Know God Smiled on You

As I hung up from a telephone conversation with our pastor, I quietly groaned and dropped my head into my hands. Charles shared we were having a business meeting Sunday following our once-a-month potluck luncheon, which this time wasn’t potluck.
