Arizona trainer Corey Cushing piloted Smart Boons (Peptoboonsmal x Smart Little Easter x Smart Little Lena) to win the National Stock Horse Association Classic Open Championship Feb. 28 in Tulare, Calif. The stallion is owned by Kevin and Sydney Knight, Peoria, Ariz.

On the first morning of NRCHA World Championship Finals competition Feb. 5, it was tough to find a harder-working horse trainer than Kevin Stallings. Not only did the Tucson, Ariz., horseman qualify all three of his Open Two-Rein entries for the finals – he rode them to three of the top four places.

The crowd at Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas, held its breath until the last run in the World’s Greatest Horseman fence work Sunday, Feb. 7 waiting to see if the luck of the draw would grant Randy Paul and Smokeelan the cow they needed to overtake the leaders, Doug Williamson and Hes Wright On, who worked first in the set of 10 finalists.

Jay McLaughlin, head trainer at Carol Rose Quarter Horses, Gainesville, Texas, rode CD Dee Vee Dee, a horse Rose raised, to the Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Circle Y Derby Open Championship. The Circle Y Derby is the first event at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions in San Angelo, Texas.
