Smart Chic Olena, who was owned by Bill Richardson, Whitesboro, Texas, and bred by Emily Woodall, Dallas, Texas, earned nearly $130,000 in his own career as a cutting and reining horse – $113,604 in cutting and $15,361 in reining. Among his achievements is a third-place tie at the 1989 National Cutting Horse Association Super Stakes, which earned the horse $32,782.
Beyond his own career, Smart Chic Olena sired 896 performers, according to Equi-Stat. Those offspring have amassed $11.9 million in earnings, making the average $13,284 for his get. While the stallion never earned money in reined cow horse events himslef, he has sired many talented individuals in the sport.
The stallion’s No. 1 reined cow horse performer is Chics Magic Potion, a 2000 stallion (Remedys Magic Potion x Remedys Reply), bred by Kim Muehlstaetter, Scottsdale, Ariz., who has garnered $314,721 in the show pen – $280,150 in cow horse and $34,571 in reining. His No. 1 performer among all disciplines is Smart Spook (Sugarplum Spook x Grays Starlight), a 2001 stallion, owned and bred by Rosanne Sternberg, Aubrey, Texas, who boasts a reining record of $405,650. His No. 1 daughter is 2003 mare Smart Crackin Chic (Kwackin x Dual Pep), bred by David Nogle, Palatine, Ill., with $215,500 on her Equi-Stat reined cow horse record.
In total, Smart Chic Olena has produced one foal that has earned in excess of $400,000, four that exceed $300,000, six with more than $200,000 and an impressive 21 foals that have garnered at least $100,000 each. The mark he’s made will not soon be forgotten.According to Richardson, Smart Chic Olena’s final months were spent grazing in his pasture with his favorite mare, Brooksinic.
