Phil & Mary Ann Rapp & Dont Look Twice
One of the top earning horses in Augusta Futurity history, Dont Look Twice, and the event’s top all-time rider, Phil Rapp, set a new record in James Brown Arena Thursday with a 231 score that earned the duo $8,295 and the first Mercuria/National Cutting Horse Association Open World Series of Cutting title of the new season.

The 2005 mare (High Brow Cat x Tapt Twice x Dual Pep) won 2011’s NCHA Open Horse of the Year. She also earned $225,269 in combined limited-age and any-age money last year, more than any other horse, according to Equi-Stat records. Equi-Stat is a statistical division of Cowboy Publishing Group that compiles cutting records.

Rapp, Weatherford, Texas, is a 10-time winner of Augusta Futurity limited-age events and $543,427 in prior Augusta limited-age earnings. Dont Look Twice, a career earner of more than $670,000 as a cutter after her most recent victory, and Rapp topped a prior 230.5 arena record set by Chiquita Pistol (Smart Little Pistol x Miss Chiquita Tari x Pay Twentyone) and trainer Tag Rice when they won the 2003 Augusta Futurity Open finals.

Dont Look Twice, bred and raised by Phil and Mary Ann Rapp, Weatherford, Texas, and owned throughout her competitive career by Waco Bend Ranch, Graham, Texas, just keeps on amazing him, Phil Rapp said.

“It’s pretty exciting to have the arena record with that mare,” Rapp said. “What can I say about that mare? She’s just one of a kind. She’s just fantastic.”

Dont Look Twice and Rapp will compete at several World Series of Cutting events and a few other any-age shows as she attempts to become cutting’s all-time top earning mare.

George C Merada (Cats Merada x Lenas Stylish Bunny x Docs Stylish Oak), a 6-year-old gelding with $135,247 in prior cutting earnings, and John Wold, Bartonville, Texas, earned an Open Reserve title with a 225 to pick up $7,179 for owner Jack and Debra Furst. Wold works for the cutting couple as their resident horse trainer at Furst Ranch.

George C Merada and Wold, American Quarter Horse Association Junior World Champions at the AQHA World Show in mid-fall, also competed in the Classic Open division at the Augusta Futurity. They did not advance past the first round. The horse has competed well at limited-age and any-age events the past two seasons, his trainer said.

“He handles things with a lot of confidence. He has such physical talent and he’s aware of the cow and what her intentions are,” Wold said. “He’s fairly easy to show. When we don’t do well, it’s usually pilot error.”
