This fall, American Quarter Horse enthusiasts will be given the opportunity to purchase horses from these legendary ranches that have been refining and perfecting American Quarter Horses, whose ranch skills, intelligence and athletic ability translate to success in the arena or in the pasture.
Hosted by the Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas, this year’s event will feature some of the industry’s finest bloodlines with success in cutting, reining, reined cow horse, roping, barrel racing and ranch horse competitions. The sale will offer more than 200 head of quality horses that range in age and includes weanlings, yearlings, 2-year-olds, fillies and stallion prospects. The Four Sixes Ranch has consigned approximately 100 head of the finest ranch and performance bred horses in the country, included in this group are approximately 50 geldings of various ages. A demonstration of sale horses will be held on Oct. 5, and the sale will be conducted on Oct. 6.
In addition to owning a piece of history and some of the top bloodlines in the industry, successful Return the Remuda bidders will be entered into a drawing for a weanling filly from the Four Sixes Ranch. To express their appreciation, the participating ranches will be donating the filly, and she will be raffled off immediately following the last lot number offered in the sale. Only buyers in the sale will have a chance to win this filly so the more horses purchased will increase a buyer’s chance to win. The winner must be present to win at the time of the drawing.
Those not in the market to purchase a horse will still find items of interest. To support the American Quarter Horse Foundation, a benefit auction will be held in conjunction with the Return to the Remuda Sale. The American Quarter Horse Foundation Benefit Auction will include numerous ranch-type memorabilia and the proceeds will benefit the American Quarter Horse Foundation programs which support equine research, America’s Horse Care Therapeutic Riding and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum.
Make plans now to be in Guthrie, Texas, at the Four Sixes Ranch Oct. 5-6 for the opportunity to purchase horses that carry historic brands and outstanding bloodlines at the Return to the Remuda Sale.
1993 AQHA Best Remuda Award Winner Four Sixes Ranch - Guthrie, Texas
The Four Sixes’ history dates back more than a hundred years to when Captain Samuel “Burk” Burnett founded the ranch in 1868. AQHA bestowed the inaugural Legacy Award on the ranch in 1997 to recognize 50 consecutive years of breeding American Quarter Horses. In 1994, the Four Sixes Ranch was honored with the Best Remuda Award in recognition of its outstanding band of working cow horses that tend thousands of the ranch’s cattle. It’s no wonder why the Four Sixes is known for “Horses with a History; Brands with a Background.”
1998 AQHA Best Remuda Award Winner Pitchfork Land & Cattle Company - Guthrie, Texas
Its heritage and stature position the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company among a handful of great American ranches. The Pitchfork's operations span around 180,000 acres in two states and more than a century of continuous operation primarily under one family. The Pitchfork stands as a testimony to those who have loved the land and its cattle and to those who have dedicated their lives to making it one of the finest ranches in the world.
2011 AQHA Best Remuda Award Winner Tongue River Ranch - Dumont, Texas
Tongue River Ranch still focuses on many of the traditions that were utilized by the Swenson’s Ranches in 1898. Cowboys still head out for the day on horseback. A day’s work involves roundup, branding and doctoring the herd by dedicated horsemen in the old fashioned cowboy way. Sleeping in their bedrolls under the stars during roundup also includes meals cooked on the chuck wagon. Tongue River Ranch takes great pride in preserving the land for future generations to come. Continuing tradition and preserving history is a way of life not a job at Tongue River Ranch.
Beggs Cattle Company – Fort Worth, Texas
Today, the Beggs Cattle Company raises commercial cattle and American Quarter Horses. The ranching business is still done the traditional way using horses. Maintaining and preserving the Western Heritage earned Beggs Cattle Company the Charles Goodnight Award in 2005, and the ranch was awarded the American Quarter Horse Association's Legacy Award in 2003 in honor of the ranches' 50 years in the registered American Quarter Horse business. They began raising horses in the early 1900s long before there was an association or registry.
