Cribbing is one of the most prevalent bad barn habits
Walking through the barn is often a symphony of pleasant noises: hay-munching, hoof-clopping and horse-nickering. Unfortunately, sometimes the sounds of the barn are not so sweet: grunts of cribbers, bangs of stall-kickers and scrapes of pawing hooves. Many horse owners are aware of their horses’ bad habits, but a staggering number – 66 percent, according to a recent survey by Dover Saddlery and QuitKick ­– do nothing about them.

A few top all-time stallions have continued producing foals after their deaths.
Five of the top 10 and 13 of the top 20 all-time cutting stallions, based on earnings of foals through 2010, are deceased but two of those 13 – Smart Little Lena and CD Olena – appear poised to continue long and successful careers as breeders despite dying last year. All-time top reining sire Hollywood Dun It also still produces a few foals each year, despite the fact that he passed away at age 22 in 2005.

Just as cool air creeps into the barn and water buckets ice, veterinarians are putting in longer days at the breeding barns, and mare motels are filling up fast. At Oswood Stallion Station, Weatherford, Texas, resident veterinarian Dr. Ron Foland estimated their roster of mares to be about 60 in mid-January with many more to come.
