The Southwest Reining Horse Association WinStar World Casino Futurity Non-Pro Championship was decided Friday, Oct. 21, 2011. Emerging the victor in both the Level 4 Non-Pro and the Level 3 Intermediate Non-Pro was Quincy Cahill Allen and Conquistador Chick.
Allen piloted Conquistador Chick to a 226.5, winning a custom SWRHA golf cart, a Bob's Custom Saddle, a National Reining Horse Association Lawson trophy, as well as an NRHA Morrison trophy, and two Montana Silversmiths buckles.
Along with the bevy of prizes, she also took home more than $7,488.
"He was great today. I was able to trust him. He came in and circled really well, and his stops were really good. That's his big deal; he's a huge stopper," Cahill said of Conquistador Chick (Conquistador Whiz x Dun It By Chick).
The Madisonville, Texas, non-pro didn't believe that Conquistador Chick would make a reining horse. She purchased the gelding in October of 2010 from Skyline Ranch, although they warned her that "Chavez" was tough. "He had all the talent but was just playful. I finally just got mad and said I couldn't do it, that it was too frustrating," she explained. Because of that frustration, Cahill called her friend, professional team roper Colby Lovell. "He always likes how reiners are broke, so I called him and told him I had one. He came, rode him, and took him home."
Chavez lived with Lovell for a few months. "Colby was getting ready to rodeo for a couple months. He called me and said that he was a really good horse, and that I should try him again. I told him that if I had wanted to have him I wouldn't have sold him," she said, laughing. "He said he'd bring him to my house while he was gone. I think all the stuff Colby did with him changed his attitude. He did real work."
Allen plans to take Chavez to the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City this winter. "This gives me a confidence boost. We've shown two times before, and they both went well. We've been able to step it up a little at a time," she said. "I thank my husband, Dustin, as well as Nathan Piper, Ruben Vandorp and, of course, Colby for selling this horse back to me. Also, thank you to all my friends and family who have supported me."
Earning the Level 4 Non-Pro Reserve title was NRHA Million Dollar Rider Mandy McCutcheon and Dun Git A Nicadual with a 223. McCutcheon and Dun Git A Nicadual (Mister Nicadual x Gotta Git Ya Dun) took home $3,336. Dun Git A Nicadual is owned by McQuay Stables of Tioga, Texas.
Michael Jeffcoat, of Waurika, Okla., won the Level 3 Non-Pro Reserve Championship on Spooks Gotta Run (Spooks Gotta Run x Prettywhizprettydoes). The pair marked a 220.5, winning $1,221.
Level 2 and Prime Time
With a score of 220.5, Michael Jeffcoat of Waurika, Okla., claimed the SWRHA's Level 2 Limited Non-Pro and Non-Pro Prime Time Championships, finished as the Reserve Champion of the Level 3 Non-Pro, and tied for fourth in the Level 4 Non-Pro. He was riding Spooks Gotta Run and won $5,244.
"I thought he did very, very well," Jeffcoat said of the Spooks Gotta Gun stallion, out of Prettywhizprettydoes. " ‘Possum’ [Spooks Gotta Run] has a huge cheering section, and they were all cheering for him today."
Jeffcoat, who owns former NRHA Futurity and Derby Non-Pro Champion Jacspin, purchased Possum in September 2010. "We were looking for a Gunner-bred colt to breed to my Jacspin mares, and we found this guy," he explained. Possum is a full-sibling to the 2010 NRHA Futurity Open Champion Spooks Gotta Whiz. "We found this guy and purchased him from Clint and Liz Haverty."
Jeffcoat plans to show Possum at the NRHA Futurity in the Non-Pro and plans for the stallion to compete with an open rider at the large derbies in 2012, including the NRHA Derby and the National Reining Breeders Classic.
"I thank Clint and Liz, as well as Marco Formentin; he's the guy who has been helping me this year," he said.
Brianna Sloan and Vintage Sail (A Sparkling Vintage x Light Paprika) won the Level 2 Non-Pro Reserve Championship with a 218.5, pocketing $704. The pair also won the Non-Pro Level 1 title.
Level 1
Friday was a big night for Brianna Sloan at the SWRHA Futurity and Show. She and her horse Vintage Sail won the WinStar World Casino Non-Pro Level 1 Championship, finished Reserve in the Level 2 Non-Pro, third in the Level 3 Non-Pro, and finished tied for seventh in the Level 4 Non-Pro with a score of 218.5.
"He's just a really good horse. He's super honest and true. I couldn't ask for a better horse," Sloan, who won $3,156, said. "People tell me I did a good job, but really, he did all the work. I just try to do him justice."
Sloan found and purchased "Gus" (A Sparkling Vintage x Light Paprika), in June of his 2-year-old year. "At the time I bought him, he was really green. I tried him and felt like he needed more time and work, and that was what I was looking for. I wanted something for a project," she explained. "He's a really kind horse, great-minded, and he's very talented too!"
Sloan, Whitesboro, Texas, has been riding with Sebastian Petrol since February. "I give all the glory to God. I thank Sebastian and Melanie and my dad Dale for supporting me," she said. "But most of all, I just thank my horse. I couldn't ask for a better one."
Melanie Schuckers and Ima Conquistador Too (Conquistador Whiz x Miz Brown Velvet) won the Level 1 Non-Pro Reserve title with a score of 215.
