Dale Wilkinson, 84, Waynesboro, Ga., underwent surgery on March 4 at Doctors Hospital, Augusta, Ga., to repair a shattered hip suffered at home on Feb. 22. According to Wilkinson’s daughter, Mavis Garber, also from Waynesboro, “The surgery went very well; he’s off the respirator and sitting up.”

In 1966, Wilkinson was part of a small group of reining enthusiasts who formed the National Reining Horse Association, which has grown to be the international governing body for a sport enjoyed worldwide.

Wilkinson was the first person inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame (1986). He is also a member of the NCHA, AQHA and Ohio Quarter Horse Association Halls of Fame. In 2002, he was the recipient of the NCHA Zane Schulte Memorial Trainer of the Year Award. And to this date, Wilkinson is still the only person to have won both the NRHA and NCHA Futurities.

While still in the Intensive Care Unit, Wilkison cannot accept calls; however, if you’d like to send him your best wishes, send cards and notes to Doctors Hospital, 3651 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA 30901 (Attn.: Dale Wilkinson).
